Jackson's Sun Orchid - WIP#2

Spent the night getting colour on all parts of the painting. Feel much happier with no blank paper showing. Background needs a lot of work - still not sure what direction I will take with that.

The camera has washed the background colour out a lot - it is a lot warmer than this picture shows.

Retriever Puppy painting - Final version

Just thought I'd post the final version of the puppy painting.

I've had this framed and it will be placed in the St Matthews Art & Craft sale (Windsor) this weekend. Hopefully it, and the other painting I am entering will sell. Fingers crossed!

Birthday cake

So I have turned my creative talents *g* to making a birthday cake again this year. However, it won't just be one cake, I have to make 3.

Here's the first one:

Not perfect, but K. was very happy and that was the main thing. She helped me make the icing!

We had a family afternoon tea today, and as K. is allergic to egg I had to make the cake. Why make just an ordinary cake, why not a number 5? It was certainly a lot easier than the castle cake I made last year.

Later this week I have to make cakes to take to pre-school - those will be cup cakes, and then next Saturday is "the" birthday party - a fairy party - with 7 other little girls coming along to join Katie to celebrate. For that I am going to attempt to make a butterfly cake. Fingers crossed that one works out.

New Painting - Jackson's Sun Orchid (WIP#1)

Started a new painting tonight, after much wasted time deliberating what I felt like painting. So I decided to go back to the wild Western Australian orchids that I love (many thanks to Tom for sharing his photos!) and try a new one.

I sketched in the flower tonight and started adding colour. This is on Canson Mi-Teintes paper, on the rough side. I am using Art Spectrum and Rembrandt soft pastels and Faber Castell Pitt pastel pencils. It is around 9"x12" in size. As there is quite a detailed pattern in each petal I am using pastel pencils quite extensively to get the design as close to the original as possible, so it is taking a little longer to draw than roughing in with soft pastels.

Retriever Puppy - WIP#4 (Final I think)

I think this guy is done. Just need to wait until daylight to take a final photo and check over the painting for any minor changes. And it needs a signature of course.

Retriever Puppy - WIP#3

Spent another Monday morning painting, which is always a great way to start the week. Not much more to do to this now - some highlights on the bush behind the puppy and some work on his face and ear, and touches to his coat.

Retriever Puppy - WIP#2

Saw a really good demo on WetCanvas today in the Soft Pastel forum by Paula Ford that showed me a new way to blend in the first layer of background colour, using a foam brush. So I tried that tonight as I had a couple of the foam brushes lying around. I'm really happy with the way they worked for the background of this piece. And it was fun trying something new.

I've used some really nice Art Spectrum greens (Australian greens) for most of the background. They went on really well on the Richeson's sanded surface.

I'm really happy with the way this painting is working out. Will finish this next week for sure. (As long as I don't get too bogged down in detail!) Now it's just getting the lights and darks right in the dog's coat and the fine details.

Retriever Puppy - WIP#1

If you visit my blog to see what art I have been up to, you may notice that a small painting of a bird has disappeared. Do not be alarmed... I removed it for copyright reasons. It will remain as a study in my portfolio. So I have moved on to a new piece.

The photo that I am working from for this comes from 'gourdburner' at WetCanvas, from the Reference Image Library - many thanks!

I am working on a new support, a Richeson sanded paper that I have not used before. This is my first draft after about an hour or so's work including sketching the dog and then laying down the first layer of colour.

I'm not sure how I feel about this surface - it will take some getting used to after Colourfix.

Kittens - growing up 2

Some new photos of the kittens being cute. There is a reason I don't have any new photos of Honey - she runs away from the camera. But she did jump up and sit on my lap at the table this morning, purring away and stayed for a while without trying to get on the table - a first.

Their favourite place to nap is on the dining chairs...

The 'big giant pillow' is also a favourite of all the cats, and us too.
